INTRODUCTORY

When more complete, this archival scrapbook will contain materials first written and published between 1963 and 2024. But at present (September 2024), nearly all items in the scrapbook were written and published since 2000.

The scrapbook is still under construction, a piece of work in progress for consultation, not a finished product. Hopefully, after consultation, it will be formally launched in spring 2025.

WHY IS THE SCRAPBOOK BEING COMPOSED?

  • To recall episodes, issues and topics in the education systems of the United Kingdom during the last 60 years, as seen and experienced by one person.
  • To greet, acknowledge and pay tribute to colleagues, comrades and mentors who lived and worked through some or all of the same 60 years.
  • To compose a resource containing reflections, ideas, memories and warnings that may be helpful in the future for researchers, practitioners, managers, campaigners and change agents, and for initial training and continuing staff development.

WHY THE PROMINENT SIGN (&) IN THE SCRAPBOOK’S TITLE?

The & sign is used here as a reminder that the two keyword terms in the scrapbook's title, patience and passion, are so interwoven with each other that neither is sufficiently expressive unless it is accompanied and complemented by the other.

WHAT NEXT?

Remains to be seen. But maybe the current version of the scrapbook could be amplified and developed by incorporating reminiscences and comments from others, and could contain alternative or complementary viewpoints and perceptions in relation to its subject-matter?

ONE FINAL NOTE

A scrapbook contains memoirs, souvenirs, remains, reminders, memorabilia, fragments. Also: scraps can be skirmishes, quarrels, altercations, rumours of war, they can be forever unfinished.
